What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are created by websites and stored on your computer.  These files contain information that websites have gathered about you and are used by the websites for various purposes.  For example, the SU Online Moodle site uses cookies to remember that you are logged into the site every time you want to go to a new page.  Without the SU Online Moodle cookie, every time you clicked on a new page in your course, you would need to login again.

Most cookie files are completely harmless.  However, others collect and store information on the pages you visited on the website, what you did on each page, and any personal information you entered on the site. Websites may also allow other websites (their advertisers, for example) to put cookies known as third-party cookies on your computer.  To ensure that companies are not perpetually tracking what you do online, clear your browser's cookies frequently.

How do I clear my browser's cookies?

The following links provide instructions for clearing browser cookies for your specific browser:

If you are unsure of what browser version you are currently using, you can visit whatbrowser.org to find out.

Two important notes

1) You must have cookies enabled in your browser in order to be able to login to and access your SU Online courses.

2) Deleting your browser's cookies is not necessarily the same as clearing your browser's cache.  Some browsers will delete both at once.  Others give you the option to delete them separately.  See What is cache and how do I clear my browser's cache? for help deleting your browser's cache.
